Chapter Thirteen
It was normal for Nick to wake with the dawn. What wasn’t normal was the soft, warm female body molded against him. Knowing it was Shannon snuggled with her sexy bottom against his raging morning hard-on made the moment unforgettable. He planned to never wake up without her at his side again. The thought shot a surge of happiness from head to toe as he lay there for a very long time luxuriating in the simple, delightful pleasure.
Before too long, though, he knew it was time to switch gears since the erection he hoped would calm down just kept on. His control was sorely tested, and Nick discovered how many ways one could count backward from a hundred.
The first rays of light crept across the ceiling before he gingerly eased out of bed. It was early still. Too damn early for her to be disturbed, so ever the gentleman, he moved quietly through the motions of getting ready for the day.
He decided on a quick run through the canyon. Burning off his pent-up energy was imperative. Anything to take his mind off crawling back under the covers, stripping her naked, and feasting on her body. He envisioned an oral indulgence that ended with his face pressed between her open thighs while he licked the throbbing little nub hidden in her delicate folds. Nick was obsessed with giving her a lifetime of mind-blowing orgasms that would rock his little lady’s world.
Yeah. He needed to run like the damn devil this morning before he sent himself up in flames.
In the kitchen to grab a water bottle, Nick paused. Maybe he’d better leave a note in case she woke and he was gone. Things were better between them, yes, but still raw and tentative. He didn’t pretend to understand the mind of a woman—what man could—but he did know she’d go into cranky overdrive with reawakened fears if he disappeared without a word.
He wasn’t going anywhere, and she had nothing to fear, but he knew she still questioned how he could have just walked away from her before.
A note felt like a good option. Her office was next to the front door. The room was open, so he headed there in search of paper and pen.
His business domain was a suite of rooms on the executive floor of a Manhattan tower. Most of the time, it looked like a staged photo op for a magazine. If he made a hellacious mess, someone cleaned up after him. When he left stacks of paper lying around, his trusted right-hand Claire sorted through the shitstorm and attached sticky notes to help make sense of it all.
Shannon’s office was a beautifully chaotic mess. Her long, cluttered desk sat under a pair of windows with gorgeous stained-glass panels. Nick had to admit that the distinctive Craftsman style was growing on him.
Spotting a pad of sticky notes and a holder jammed with pens in a blaze of colors, Nick dashed off a quick explanation about going for a run and ripped it from the stack.
